As I
mentioned in the last post, the last time we visited Crooked River State Park
we saw quite a few gopher tortoises. This time we saw just one. Here are the
pictures. Can you figure out the problem this tortoise has?
I thought it was some type of fungus or even mushrooms! Turns
out this tortoise had a tick on its eyelid and quite a few on its butt (or tail
or whatever). Yuck! These are big. The ranger says they normally are able to
rub them off. Every once in a while, the rangers capture a tortoise and pull
the ticks off to help them since gopher tortoises are a threatened species in
Florida.
