Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park

Jacksonville has two city parks with camping. We visited the first one last year. We found the second one quite different. The campground is much bigger with 293 sites but with heavy vegetation there is still privacy.

However, this is spring break season here so there were a LOT of families. It was not a quiet park with kids biking and screaming. The weather was in the 80s so the beach was full of people with both campers and day trippers on Sunday.

It rained that night and into Monday and got colder. We spent several hours in the RV listening to the rain and old TV shows like Adam-12 and Emergency. By Tuesday morning the beach was pretty empty.

The trails were interesting. The park had two mountain bike trails that are rated pretty tough. Our bikes are not mountain bikes and I don’t like bumping over all the roots.

But I really enjoyed the hiking trail. Most of the trees are huge palm trees and live oaks. It’s quite a tropical jungle.

The park has a lake with trees full of birds roosting. The egrets, herons, and cormorants are big. They somewhat scared me as they burst out of the trees when I hiked under them.

We think we’ll return to the park but maybe keep track of spring break next time.
