Forts Galore

We've learned that the U.S. built a series of forts in the 1840's along the Gulf. to protect again French, British, and Spanish attacks.  Specifically, Pensacola was the site for a new Navy Yard so 4 different forts were built at various different spots around the bay.

Ironically, the forts were never used against foreign attack but were only used in the Civil War between the North and South.  One of the pictures below appear to be musket holes from an attack by the Confederates at one of these forts.  So far we've visited two of the four forts (Fort Barrancas and Advance Redoubt).  Another one (Fort McRee) was destroyed during the Civil War.

Along with the American forts, we visited an older Spanish fort built in 1781.
Finally, we visited a 1859 lighthouse.  I'm not sure if the South is especially haunted, but this is another building that was on one of the ghost shows.  Plus, we're planning on visiting Fort Pickens (the 4th American fort) which is also supposed to be haunted. One of the rangers at Fort Barrancas mentioned that people bring ghost hunting equipment to these forts.  While ghost hunting shows advertise the place, many of the people who come because of this can be a pain.  So far we haven't seen any ghosts.  Maybe tomorrow!
