Ohio Indian Mounds

We’ve been to mounds in Georgia, Mississippi and Florida.  While on a business trip to Ohio I had to stop at the mounds in Newark.  One of the guys at work told me a story how he played golf on these mounds.  The mounds are big (3000 acres) so they aren’t just at the park but can be found at different places in town.  A country club golf course was built using the mounds as part of the course.  Seems weird and a bit of poor taste.  Other parts of the mounds have been lost due to farming and construction.

The mounds were built from 100 BCE to 400 CE by the Hopewell Culture.  Archeologists believe they were used for social and religious reasons and as a way to mark astrological events.  Of course at this point, nobody really knows why they were built.

Squirrel !!!...in the tree.

The park has a portion of the mounds including the Great Circle.  It’s a 5’ deep moat surrounded by 8’ or higher earth walls.
