Capitol Reef to Moab – Scenic , Fun, & Educational

The road between Capitol Reef and Moab (home to Arches NP, Canyonland NP, and Dead Horse Point SP) is scenic, fun, educational, and a bit weird. For the scenic part, here are some pictures along the way.

For the fun part, Goblin Valley State Park is great place to wander.

I love that this was the setting for the movie “Galaxy Quest” where the stone monsters came to life.

Picture from the movie & internet.

There are no real trails here. You just wander among the rocks.

And name formations if you can. I think this is a submarine sandwich along with some hamburgers.
Sadly, this is also where several Boy Scout leaders destroyed a rock formation and put it on YouTube. Their excuse was it was dangerous and about to fall over (in the next 1000 years or so).

Nearby was a trail called Little Wild Horse Canyon. This is slot canyon hiking at its best! The full hike is an 8-mile loop. We just traveled in 40 minutes and returned back the same way. Very fun!

Some climbing is involved.
The slot canyon gets very narrow at times.

We loved the swirls in the rock.

For the educational, we stopped at the John Wesley Powell River History Museum. Lots of good information on Powell (who did a 3-month trip down Green River and Colorado River including the Grand Canyon in 1869) and the river.

Plus the museum had dinosaurs!
