Caprock Canyon

Caprock Canyon and Palo Duro are two state parks in the panhandle of Texas that seem to have a sort of competition with each other. Palo Duro is on many lists of the best state parks in the country while Caprock is preferred by some but mostly an “also-ran”. We are going to Palo Duro next, so we’ll see.

The bison herd blocked the roads for us again in a different area of the park. It sounds like a chicken joke, but I wonder why they like crossing roads so much. And they do it so slowly! This guy didn’t seem happy with us at all.

Water levels are still very low in Texas. It would be hard to fish from this pier.

The big thing here is to hike in the canyon. The canyon walls show different layers of sandstone with lots of gypsum layers (the white streaks). The river beds are mostly dry now, so walking down them is fun to see the newly eroded layers.

The only problem on the trails is watching out for horse ‘evidence’. Many people take their horses here to ride the trails.
