After
hurting my foot, we’re spending 3 days at Davis Mountains State Park without
going out on the trails. For the first 2 days, my walking was from the couch to
the back (5 steps to the bathroom and 6 to the bed). Things are much better now
so we did a little sight-seeing.
The
campground is in a valley with absolutely no cell phone or TV signals. But, you
can drive 1 mile to the top of the mountain to both see the view and get cell
phone service. The funny part is there is a repeater station there for the fire
station and the ranger stations. They apparently keep a speaker on to test the
system. John and I were looking at the view and suddenly we heard voices. The
other people at the top (some distance away) pretty much thought we were crazy when
we mentioned the voices.
Nearby
is Fort Davis National Historical Site. The outpost was active from 1854 -1891
to protect travelers passing from San Antonio to El Paso. We braved the cold
and wind to walk around the military post.
One thing I liked were all the toys found at the site for the soldiers families. One room
had a clarinet, piccolo, guitar, violin, and piano that kept the adults busy too. But the barracks for the enlisted men was pretty sparse.
We’re
off the Big Bend National Park. Most likely that means no cell phone or wifi
service for up to a week.
