Enchanted Rock

Yesterday we climbed Enchanted Rock.  They've found human evidence in this area dating back 10,000 years.  It's called Enchanted due to different stories about flickering lights and groans from the rock.  The best story I heard is that if you stay overnight on the rock you become invisible.  Sounds cool!

Anyhow, the map you get says it's only 0.6 miles from the parking lot to the top, but with a 425 foot rise.  Well, it has to be longer than that!  It's a tough walk that takes time but is OK as long as you stop every once in awhile.  Given the views, that's not a problem.  It almost seems like a pilgrimage.  If you expand the 1st picture (double click on it), you can see little dots criss crossing the rock that are people walking up the dome.
Enchanted Rock is called an exfoliation dome.  That's what it is called when igneous rock (this one is pink granite) is pushed up and exposed.  The granite forms sheet joints like layers of an onion that break off over time.  Some of the layers are thin (less than a foot), while others can be 15' or so.  The blocks in this picture show pieces of an older sheet.  This is supposed to be the 2nd largest dome in the U.S. (Stone Mountain in Georgia is larger).
