Upper Peninsula Michigan

The U.P. is a unique section of the United States. The people love the outdoors and can handle cold weather. There are lots of trails here (and in upper Minnesota and Wisconsin) for snowmobiles and OHV (off-highway vehicles like ATVs and jeeps). Hunting and fishing is big here. The UP’ers are sometimes called Yoopers (UP’ers). I had to laugh (internally) the first time I heard on the locals say “eh”. “Nice day, eh?” They definitely have a sense of humor about it since we drove past a burger place called “eh! Burger”.

I guess Yoopers are more creative with the materials they have. We stopped at “Da Yooper Tourist Trap” where they have multiple displays showing world records or just to poke fun at themselves. Big Gus is the World’s Largest Working Chainsaw.

Big Ernie is the world’s largest working rifle.

This is Eddy the Wood. It is one of two working wood burning tractors in the country.

Christine supposedly still plows out their parking lot in the winter. Personally, I liked the rock shop where I bought a bit of native copper.

We drove through Christmas Michigan. There is a Welcome to Christmas sign, a Christmas Motel, a large Santa Clause at a casino, and Santa’s Workshop with this large Santa in front. This was a drive-thru for us.

We were told that pasties (pronounced with a short ă) were big in the UP. Pasties came to the US when Cornish miners moved here. It is a mixture of meat and vegetables inside a pastry. This makes a good lunch when you are working in the mine. There are pasty shops all over the UP. We stopped and bought a couple pasties at Muldoons in Munising. I was planning on taking a picture of the whole thing but it was just so good it almost disappeared before I remembered.

The rumor is that Bigfoot likes pasties.

Coolest part of the day happened quickly and there are no pictures. We were driving down the road and suddenly a bald eagle was flying down at our level alongside the RV. I think it captured an animal from the ditch along the road, but either way, it was definitely cool!
