At
the last park we were able to canoe the Mississippi River safely. At Itasca
State Park, we were able to walk across the Mississippi. It’s only about 20
feet wide as it leaves Lake Itasca and heads for the Gulf. The park is known for being the headwaters of the Mississippi. The area where the “river” comes out of Itasca Lake is full of people of all ages crossing and taking pictures. You can cross by walking across slippery rocks, through the water, or walking the log.
I
made John cross to the other side of the log before I would count it as
crossing the Mississippi.
People
were helping each other take pictures of each other. We took pictures for four
or five groups of people while we were there. The weird part is that the
Mississippi goes north here. We checked online and it takes a long curve around
before it heads south.
I
came back to this spot on my morning bike ride. It was completely peaceful
without the crowds of people.
